FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE NOTES

Similie- a comparison that uses the words "like" or "as"
*The boy was as quiet as a mouse
*He ran like the wind

Metaphor- a comparison that is directly stated and does not use the words like or as
*She is a beast on the soccer field
*He ran with his giraffe legs

Personification- gives human qualities to non human objects
*The tree danced
*The dog sang

Hyperbole- A figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated
*I have a million things to do
*I almost died when I saw my report card

Idiom- An expression that has a meaning different than it's individual words
* It was raining cats and dogs
*My mom had a cow when I lost my phone

Onomatopoeia- When words reflect sounds
*Boom, Hiss, Bang

Alliteration- When the beginning consonant sounds of words repeat
*Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
